The Barnard mainnet upgrade has begun.
Following the Andromeda release, Barnard introduces a new governance model, significant DevEx improvements, and sets the stage for sub-second finality with the upcoming Supernova update.
Here's a quick overview of what's new.

For the first time, protocol changes move entirely onchain. Any holder willing to post a 500 EGLD bond can propose; staked + liquid EGLD now decides what ships. The network’s future is literally in your hands.
Fairer costs, fuller blocks
A redesigned fee model cuts the gas-penalty factor from 10× to 2×. Users pay closer to true cost, dApps fit more transactions per block, and everyday interactions feel quicker and cheaper.
Real-time possibilities
Millisecond-level VM hooks and a new account-iterator endpoint let builders stream data, sync game states, or trigger finance logic exactly on cue—opening use cases that weren’t possible before.
Smoother build process
Go 1.23 tool-chain, transfer-with-error support, and reserved-function flags shorten compile times and simplify smart-contract UX, so teams ship features faster.
Ready for Supernova
Barnard is the last prerequisite for sub-second finality. Validators and service partners: update to 1.10.4 ahead of 24 July to pave the way for the next leap.
