🔵Ripple and the SEC officially reach a settlement agreement, proposing to settle the case for $50 million and withdraw the lawsuit.
DeThings, May 9 – Court documents reveal that Ripple and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have reached a settlement agreement. The proposal includes lifting the injunction imposed on Ripple by the court's August 2024 ruling and paying only $50 million of the $125 million civil penalty to the SEC, with the remaining $75 million returned to Ripple. Both parties have agreed not to appeal or request the annulment of previous rulings. This case, which began in 2020, revolves around the issue of XRP being sold as a security. SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw publicly opposed the agreement, stating that it undermines regulatory authority, weakens court decisions, and exacerbates regulatory gaps. The agreement still requires a "directive ruling" from the court and approval from the appellate court before it can take effect.
